Tecumseh Council Completes 2024 Budget Deliberations

Tecumseh, ON - Tecumseh Town Council completed the budget deliberations for 2024, with a consolidated (County, education and municipal) tax levy increase of approximately 4.25%. The increase in the tax levy approved by Council on January 16 – as part of the 2024 budget – translates into $155 annual increase for the average residential property assessed at $250,000 (based on MPAC’s 2016 current value assessment, which is the basis for the 2017-2024 tax years). The Tecumseh portion of this lift is $90.

Council began deliberations with a draft municipal levy increase of 5.55% and lowered that to 4.55% before approving the budget at tonight’s meeting. This consists of 1.5% towards capital and asset lifecycle funding, 1.3% noncontrollable expense increases passed on to municipality (insurance, benefits, contracted services) and 1.8% for general operating expenditures.

The 2024 budget reflects Council’s strategic priorities using five primary themes:

  • Increased allocations to Capital Reserves
  • Development and Assessment Growth opportunities
  • Growth-related pressures on operations to keep pace with community growth and service expectations
  • Implementation of the 3rd and final phase of the Organizational Review and other continuous improvement service reviews to modernize and create efficiency
  • Managing inflationary pressures.

“The 2024 budget places a strong emphasis on essential investments in growth and development as well as recreation, community safety, and existing roads and infrastructure, all while dealing with rising costs and inflation. It aims to secure a prosperous and vibrant future for Tecumseh,” said Mayor Gary McNamara. “I would like to thank my Council colleagues, Town staff and you - the taxpayers of Tecumseh - for your support in making the Town a safe and livable community.”

2024 will see several ongoing and new infrastructure projects completed this year, including the Lacasse Ball Diamond Upgrades, Cada Library Building Improvements, Maidstone Recreation Centre Outdoor Washrooms, Scully & St. Mark’s Storm Pump Station Replacement, Sanitary Sewer Extensions in Oldcastle Hamlet, Lesperance Road Multi-Use Trail (County Road 22 to County Road 42) and the Tecumseh Hamlet Trunk Sanitary Sewer and Trunk Watermain. Additionally, new projects are kicking off in 2024 including Lakewood Park All Season Washrooms and an All Ages Water Feature, and the Arena Floor Replacement.

Council and Staff thank all residents and stakeholders who took part in public engagement and provided feedback through the budget review process.
